Colors: Many different colors that are expressed throughout the story symbolize different things. For example, the author basically describes the color purple as all of the good things in the world. "At the beginning of the book, Celie had no sense of what the color purple meant. She had such a horrible life, she's not stopping to smell the roses, she's just surving. Celie was practically dead emotionally but not physically" (Shmoop Editorial Team 1). Shug taught her the concept of the color purple. Another example was when Mr. decided to paint the inside of his house white to symbolize a new beginning. "Also, some see purple as a symbol for bruises on the beaten woman’s face" (Kane 2).
Letters: The letters represent the communication between Celie and God and Celie and Nettie. Writing letters was the only lifeline back in this time. For awhile, Celie did not receive the letters that Nettie had been writing to her. Therefore, Nettie felt lost in the world because Celie was her only audience. Once Celie began to realize that Nettie had been writing to her all the time, they began to build their relationship again and catch up on everything in their separate lives. The writing of the letters builds strength in Celie and Nettie. Writing is a way to express emotions.
Farm Community: Most of the whole book takes place in a little rural community. As a result of the small community and a few visitors, the author was able to express every character more thoroughly. The community did not intermingle with the outside world; therefore, they did not really keep up with any news or current events.
